Damm Platz is called “De Dam” in Dutch. It’s the main square in the center of Amsterdam and it’s located 750 meters away from Central Station – which was designed by Pierre Cuypers who designed the Rijksmuseum. Dam Square is the historic heart of Holland’s capital and the location of many events of national significance. One of the most important national events held on Dam Square is Remembrance Day.

On the Dam you can find the Royal Palace, the New Church, Ripley’s Believe it or not, the Wax Museum Madame Tussauds, the department-store De Bijenkorf (translated: “the beehive”) and the National Monument, where the annual National Remembrance Day is held yearly on the 4th of May.

“De Dam” derives its name from its original function: a dam on Amsterdam’s Amstel river. This is how Amsterdam got its name. Built in approximately 1270, the dam formed the first connection between the settlements on the sides of the river.

Damrak is the street that leads up to Dam Square from Amsterdam Central Station, adjacent to Dam Square is Beursplein (stock exchange square). Holland’s current stock exchange can be still be found at this beautiful historic square. The Dutch were the ones who invented stocks.

The Red Light District – locally known as “De Wallen” – is close to Dam Square and Central Station. This famous area has city’s oldest streets, the oldest houses and one of world’s oldest profession.
